Questions people ask

What is the difference between an SSN and an ITIN?

The Social Security Administration issues SSNs to US citizens and to noncitizens who are allowed to work. The IRS issues an ITIN to people who need a US tax number but cannot get an SSN, regardless of immigration status. An ITIN does not give the right to work. You can build credit with both, but fewer companies accept an ITIN.

Can I get a credit card with an ITIN?

Yes, some banks accept an ITIN. Capital One Platinum Secured and Quicksilver Secured cards accept an ITIN.

How do I get an ITIN?

Send Form W-7 to the IRS together with your federal tax return: by mail, at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or at a VITA site. Applying at an IRS center or a VITA site is free. It takes about 7 weeks, or 9-11 weeks in tax season.

What is a payday loan?

A short loan, usually $500 or less, that you repay from your next paycheck, typically in 2 to 4 weeks. The fee depends on your state, usually $10 to $30 for every $100. Credit unions offer similar loans (PAL) at up to 28% APR.
